Workshop - Inside the Atmos: Anatomy of an Immersive Soundscape

October 23, 2026
Education 5 - Uxmal

Behind every measurement is an ear that makes the final call: a system isn’t ready when it measures well, but when it sounds good. What, then, makes a sound feel “immersive” rather than just “spacious”? Dolby Atmos creates a three-dimensional sound field that surrounds the listener, but accurately recognizing its elements requires a trained ear—the brain, not just the equipment. In this workshop, we’ll explore in detail how immersion is created: what distinguishes a three-dimensional sound field from traditional stereo imaging, how a sound source is positioned in terms of height, depth, and surround, and how to leverage these elements when creating or evaluating a mix.

Through hands-on exercises with headphones guided in real time—and using a methodology based on the neuroscience of auditory perception, that is, how the brain processes and interprets sound—participants will learn to listen to the immersive experience with intention and to recognize every corner of the soundscape that Atmos makes available to them. The goal is not only to hear better, but to develop an ear that perceives, analyzes, and communicates sound like a professional: distinguishing artifacts, reading the space, and maintaining a listening practice that translates consistently across any playback system.

Rather than simply mastering a format, the assistant will develop the expert judgment that comes with experience over the years—a skill that never becomes obsolete: the ability to listen, which is what makes a Pro AV professional so hard to replace—even in the face of AI.

A useful training session for the entire industry: integrators who commission systems based on what they hear, designers and acousticians who compare space and measurements, live audio professionals who make decisions under pressure, broadcast professionals who prioritize dialogue and audio quality, places of worship and corporate/educational AV professionals who depend on clear communication, manufacturers who sell by highlighting sonic differences, and technology managers and end users who want to make their own judgments when dealing with salespeople.
