As a control systems programmer on audiovisual projects, I learned how the systems worked from a technical standpoint, but I also realized why some clients were dissatisfied with the system’s functionality, why projects were delayed, and where the integrator had room for improvement; However, when I started my own business as an integrator and began working directly with end users to ensure the successful execution of their projects—and, above all, to close a sale with them—I realized that, in many cases, the end user lacked the context needed to execute an AV project. Often, these are IT managers who are asked to take charge of the project simply because IT is the most tech-savvy department in the company, but they are not experts in high-end AV solutions.

With 13 years of experience selling and implementing projects, I have encountered a wide variety of project scenarios and personalities among IT managers and architectural designers, and I have come to realize that they need basic training to enable them to interact with us, the AV integrators, and to create a synergy that ensures the project’s success.

Basic training that enables them to focus on functionality rather than equipment models or costs, and to identify the integration process: understand timelines and the requirements of other departments to facilitate cross-functional collaboration, and become leaders among all their vendors; they should be aware of what documentation or software must be delivered to them at the end of a project. Generally, I’ve found end users who don’t have a technical report for project maintenance, let alone the source code, because they didn’t realize they would need it; and many of them severed ties with the original integrator and lack the support needed to ensure the continuity of their operations.

Those who have learned from past mistakes are beginning to understand the entire process and are becoming more demanding of suppliers as they seek to improve efficiency in their projects. The purpose of this presentation is to ensure that they don’t have to “learn the hard way” and that we, as AV integrators, understand how to improve synergy with our clients.
