Carlos Cortes

Sound Artist and Sound Designer, NINGEN

Carlos Cortés Navarrete (Mexico City, February 25, 1978) is a renowned sound artist and sound designer with more than two decades of experience in the film industry. He began his training in audio engineering at The Recording Workshop (Ohio, U.S.) in 2001. After completing his studies, he worked as a live sound engineer for numerous bands in Nebraska, touring throughout the United States. Upon his return to Mexico, he earned a bachelor’s degree in Computer Systems, solidifying a technical foundation that would complement his focus on sound. In 2002, he joined Labodigital, a pioneering film post-production company in Mexico, where he played a key role in the design and setup of the company’s first sound mixing suite for post-production.

In 2013, he opened the prestigious film sound post-production studio Splendor Omnia as the lead re-recording mixer. Throughout his career, he has worked on more than 80 feature films, and in 2017, his work on *Tempestad* earned him the Silver Ariel for Best Sound, an award presented by the Mexican Academy of Film Arts and Sciences. His international recognition came in 2021 with Darius Marder’s *Sound of Metal*, for which he won the Oscar, the BAFTA, and the Cinema Audio Society (CAS) Award in the Best Sound category—in a year when the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences merged the sound mixing and sound editing categories for the first time. His artistic curiosity has led him to participate in numerous musical projects, and he currently leads NINGEN, a live electronic music duo with Ricardo Lavalle, with whom he continues to push the boundaries of sound experimentation.
